Lake Travis Fire Rescue got an unusual call as one of its own fire stations caught fire Monday.

The station at R.R. 620 and Hudson Bend Road sustained major damage to its attic.

According to the assistant fire chief, a secretary smelled smoke and alerted firefighters on the opposite side of the building.

About 16 people, including three firefighters, evacuated.

Trucks from other stations responded and quickly put out the blaze.

Asst. Fire Chief Robert Abbott explained the scene.

"I was actually out with one of the battalion chiefs. We heard the engine company radio it in. For a second we were in disbelief at the address," he said. "We were thinking maybe it was the building right next to the fire station. But when we realized that he was talking about his building, we realized it was legitimate."

Abbott said the building was old and had many additions.

He said the department's firefighting operations should not be affected because the damage was contained to the administrative side.

There is no word yet on how it started.
