May is the deadliest month for Austin teen drivers, according to a new report from Allstate. With graduation, prom and summer break right around the corner, it's an important time to remind teenagers that speeding, distractions and carelessness can be costly.

The Concordia Academy Junior/Senior prom was full of brand new drivers on Friday night at the Oasis on Lake Travis. They probably weren’t thinking that car crashes are the number one killer of teens or that it's the deadliest time of the year for teen drivers. But that's the reality here in Austin according to the Allstate report. The two biggest contributors are speeding and teens not wearing their seat belts.

One Junior at the prom was 16 year old Tandy King. She just started driving two months ago. It's been a learning experience for her and for her Mom.

“Watch where you're going,” Barbara King yelled as they left Tandy’s prom hair appointment.

“I am,” Tandy quipped back. “Calm down!”

“It's scary having a teenager,” King responded.

In Tandy's short time behind the wheel, she's already been in two accidents.

“The first one wasn't my fault,” Tandy explains with a smile. “He stopped too soon in front of me.”

“A lot of times, we pray,” her Mom said. “We pray a lot.”

Allstate reports that more than 13% of all fatal accidents involving Austin teen drivers happen in May. A big factor? All the parties. It's prom and graduation season.

“It's hard watching her grow up,” King said while watching Tandy get ready for prom.

From the dress, to the earrings, to the make-up, to the boutonniere, it’s a big tradition, but one that can also be dangerous, with more teens out on the roads.

“I just don't pay that much attention and I figure 5 over (the speed limit) isn't that bad,” Tandy admitted.

Her Mom said it's a great time for all parents to remind their teens about being responsible drivers.

“I just hope she listens to everything we tell her,” she said.

Tandy is not allowed to talk on the phone while driving. It's good to reduce possibly deadly driving distractions, like making calls and texting while driving, because that can contribute to driver error. According to that report 87% of all teen car crashes are due to driver errors.

Allstate says September and June are the second and third deadliest months for teen drivers here in Austin.
