A woman mistakes a boat ramp on Lake Austin for a road and drowns. Now county parks officials are trying to find ways to prevent the confusion.
Police say the woman was driving down Quinlan Park Road which is the main drive for Steiner Ranch. The two lane windy road goes straight into the water. Locals say she made an easy mistake.
"I know it's very dark out here there's no lights out here on these roads. It can be really bad at night,” boater Donovan Cacanaugh said.
APD detectives think the woman got confused, turning onto Quinlan Park Road thinking it was another street.
"We think that she just accidentally drove into the lake. She was able to get out of the car and subsequently trying to get from the car back to shore subsequently died. I don't think there were any tire marks so that leads us to believe that she might not have known that she was about to go into the river because there were no skid marks, no breaking,”
APD Sgt. Richard Stresing said.
Sgt. Richard Stresing says a relative called to report a woman missing in the area, but police did not locate a body until a boater spotted the vehicle early Monday morning.
Park officials say this is the first death, but drivers have gone into the water many times. The last instance was in June.
Right now drivers are warned by a sign that says “road ends in lake 500 feet.” County parks officials say the woman's death has prompted them to look adding more signage and get with traffic engineers to re-stripe the road or add speed bumps to prevent any more accidents.
Police are not releasing the identity of the woman killed in the accident. They just say she appeared to be in her 30s and is Hispanic.
