Fishing on Lake Travis this weekend was like going back over four years in a time machine. The lake level is still rising slowly, and fish are scattered everywhere.

The dingy water and floating flotsam is making it a real challenge for anglers to catch many bass. Things will not get back to normal until the level stabilizes and water clarity improves.

Big bass of the week honors go to Don Ferrill of Fort Worth. On the morning of May 30, Don impressed me and his wife, Denise, by hooking and landing a huge 7-pound largemouth bass.


We did not depart Lakeway Marina until 9 a.m. due to the threat of thunderstorms. Having to be back by 10:20 a.m. did not give us much time to figure out what the fish were doing.

Don had never used a plastic worm before but let me coach him on the details. At our last stop on the last cast, Don made a good hook-set, and the battle was on. The huge bass jumped twice and made several drag stripping runs under the boat.

I was really excited to finally get my landing net under this strong bass. I then learned that Denise had captured the event on video.

This beautiful bass was released after a photo session and briskly swam off to rejoin her buddies.

Congratulations to Don. … Catching a 7-pound bass as your first fish on a plastic worm is a rare feat.

The very next morning, I took clients to this hot spot, and we did catch four bass up to 2 pounds on the same lure — a green pumpkin worm with a chartreuse tail.

Surface lures and spinnerbaits are producing a few strikes from smaller bass. Better water clarity will enhance the catch rate this month.
