Algae bloom in Lake Austin may affect taste, odor of water

 High levels of blue green algae in Lake Austin may result in "earthy" smelling water.
Austin Water is notifying its customers of a naturally-occurring algae bloom in Lake Austin that may cause an unusual taste and odor in the drinking water. According to a release Friday, routine sampling and testing of the water supply has detected elevated algae levels that could lead to taste and odor issues. Austin Water said the water is safe to drink, but may have a musty or fishy taste. It is adding activated carbon to the treatment process with the goal of minimizing the impact of any taste or odor. Austin Water said it will continue to test and monitor the water until the algae has subsided.
