Central Texas woke up to freezing temperatures, and in some isolated areas, patches of icy roadway today.

The chilly start will make way for a sunny day with a high of 51, the National Weather Service said.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport reached a low of 22 degrees shortly after 6:30 a.m., while Camp Mabry reported a low of 27 this morning.

And some areas, including Killeen, were reporting patches of icy roadway.

The service did not have specific reports of ice on Austin roadways, but said with the recent rains that preceded the cold blast of air, it was possible in isolated and elevated spots.

“There could be some pathces of ice, especially in elevated areas,” said Marianne Sutton, meteorologist for the service. It did not seem that likely, however, for Austin since “we have had some light rain, but we also had several hours of sunshine” that followed.

Austin police, and sheriff’s offices for Travis and Williamson counties said they had received no reports of ice on area roadways.

In Killeen, residents were asked to avoid certain roads and bridges until temperatures warm up.

“Please drive safely this morning,” said Carroll Smith, spokeswoman for the Killeen police department. “If at all possible please try to avoid these roadways or bridges until the temperatures rise.”

Killeen residents were asked to avoid these roads until temperatures improve:

28th St. and Veteran’s Memorial Blvd Illinois and W.S. Young Conder and Veteran’s Memorial Blvd Courtney and Central Texas Expressway Imperial and Central Texas Expressway Garth Rd. Willowsprings Overpass Jasper Overpass Lake Rd. and Tucker Central Texas Expressway westbound in front of Texas Land and Cattle.
