The Lake Travis Cavaliers didn't have Colin Lagasse, Griffin Gilbert or Shaun Nixon on Friday night.
They did, however, have Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield threw for 256 yards and accounted for six touchdowns as Lake Travis rolled to a 43-14 victory over Hendrickson. The blowout victory came a year after Hendrickson played Lake Travis close in a 34-24 Cavalier win.
The Cavaliers posted the 29-point victory without the services of Gilbert, a TCU-bound wide receiver, and Lagasse, a quarterback who has been recruited to SMU as an athlete. The Lake Travis View reported this week that Gilbert and Lagasse were sidelined with groin and shoulder injuries, respectively, while Nixon, a sophomore running back who had an 11-yard touchdown run in his varsity debut last week, was suffering from a toe injury.
"I told the kids all week we had to step up; that's what kids at Lake Travis have been doing (the past) four years," said Lake Travis coach Hank Carter, who was also without sophomore offensive lineman Ty Anderson on Friday.
Mayfield, who relieved Lagasse in last week's 35-7 win over Westlake, led Lake Travis on a 10-play opening drive that ended with Zachary Stewart's 34-yard field goal. On the Cavaliers' next possession, Mayfield threw a 15-yard scoring pass to give Lake Travis a 10-0 lead.
Hendrickson running back Daje Johnson scored on a 15-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to cut Lake Travis' lead to 10-6, but Mayfield contributed three touchdown passes and a scoring run on Lake Travis' next four possessions.
Mayfield completed 14 of 19 passes for 204 yards in the first half and split his four touchdown passes between Cameron Wrinkle and Zach Austin. The junior quarterback also rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and Lake Travis held a 36-6 halftime lead.
"He was throwing well," Austin said. "I would probably give all the credit to him and the line."
"Zach and Cameron, they're good targets to hit," Mayfield said. "I like throwing to them."
Mayfield finished with 256 passing yards and five touchdown tosses. Austin had 123 receiving yards and three touchdowns, and Wrinkle had six receptions, 41 rushing yards and two scores.
"Tonight was a trap game for us," said Carter, whose defense allowed only one offensive touchdown for a second straight week. "Last year we overlooked those guys a little, and they hit us in the mouth."
The victory will send Lake Travis into next week's matchup at Aledo with a 2-0 record. Aledo, which is 1-1 this season, is Class 4A, Division II's defending champion. The Bearcats snapped Lake Travis' 48-game winning streak last year with a 14-10 victory in Austin.
Hendrickson dropped to 1-1 with the loss. The Hawks will try to rebound next week against Rouse.
