Central Texas’ brutal heat wave won’t let up this weekend with triple-digit temperatures on tap and a heat advisory in effect until tonight, the National Weather Service says.
Today’s high could reach 104 degrees for the third straight day. And more triple-digit highs are expected this weekend and next week.
There’s also a slight chance of rain in the forecast tonight, the service said, but the region didn’t see rain yesterday despite 20 percent predictions for showers.
A heat advisory has been extended until tonight as today’s heat index, or “feels like” temperature, could reach 105 or higher, the service said, and lows will be around 80.
“Heat stroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion are likely with prolonged exposure and physical activity,” the service said. “Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.”
The region’s continuous flow of extreme summer temperatures took a deadly turn this week, as the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office reported two heat-related deaths.
People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, to wear light clothing and to limit strenuous activity outside to early morning or evening hours, the service said. Also, under no circumstance should children and pets be left in unattended vehicles where temperatures can soar to lethal levels.
So far this year, Austin has seen 58 days of triple-digit heat. At this pace, we could break a record 69 triple-digit days in 1925 or 68 days of 2009. Austin has also seen a record 26 straight triple-digit days in this most recent heat wave.
