Devil's Cove -- a popular party spot on Lake Travis -- remains closed this Independence Day. This as Travis County divers search the murky water for a missing man.
“We've got six divers that are rotating two at a time in the water trying to do a complete search of the cove,” said Roger Wade, Travis County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
The trouble started Sunday night. That's when authorities say a 26-year-old man fell into the water off a number of boats tied together at the cove. He never resurfaced. Multiple rescue crews searched for the man Sunday night but couldn't find him.
“This is not your backyard swimming pool,” explained Wade. “You can't see the bottom of the lake. You can't see when somebody gets into trouble.”
All boaters were asked to leave, and authorities sealed off the destination spot.
In the past six weeks there have been four drownings at Lake Travis. Authorities say all could have been prevented.
“It's very important to wear a life jacket or flotation device so you stay on top of the water where people see you,” Wade said.
It's a message some boaters the Ray family is taking to heart. They have life jackets for everybody.
“We're taking precautions to keep everybody safe,” said boater Rochelle Ray.
Chang Park knows safety is a key part to avoiding an accident.
“We hit a big wave,” said Park. "Something really bad could have happened, but no one got hurt because they were wearing life jackets.”
And while it may not be law for adults, authorities say wearing a life jacket will save your life.
