For the second time in one week, another swimmer drowned at Lake Travis. It happened around 2 Saturday afternoon off Windy Point near Bob Wentz Park on the North Shore of the Lake.
Kirby Adams, a certified rescue diver, was nearby and rushed to help.
“I got a notice of someone drowning," Adams said. "I was pretty must the first on the scene."
Authorities say 34-year-old Edwin Morales was trying to swim across the lake when he went under.
“One or two of his buddies noticed that he slid underwater,” said Captain Wes Priddy with the Travis County Sheriff’s Department. “One noticed he tried to say something and couldn't, and he slipped under the water.”
The Morales was part of a church group from Houston that was visiting for the day.
Last Sunday, a 22-year-old disappeared in the same area. It took rescue teams three days to find his body.
A sign at the park warns swimmers of the dangers. In big red letters it says, “Swim at your own risk, wear a life jacket.” If you don't have a life jacket, you can borrow one from Park Rangers.
“They have a box that has life jackets,” said Priddy. “They are there for folks to borrow and return when they are finished. We would like to see folks utilize those instead of ending in a tragic incident.”
Authorities say this is the third drowning at Bob Wentz Park and the fourth at Lake Travis.
