Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert, selected to play in next week’s Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game on July 22, has been pulled from the South roster.
Gilbert, who will play for Texas this fall, was expected to be the headliner in the annual game, which will be played at Royal-Memorial Stadium. He led Lake Travis to back-to-back Class 4A state championships, breaking passing records along the way.
As a senior he completed 302 of 436 passes for 4,851 yards, 55 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also carried the ball 115 times for 767 yards and 23 touchdowns. In the state championship game against Longview, he surpassed the state record for career yardage, finishing with 12,537.
A spokesman for the Texas High School Coaches Association said Gilbert is not injured.
Could it be that Mack Brown and his Longhorn coaching staff simply don’t want their star recruit to risk injury in the game?
Gilbert’s spot has been taken by Eric Soza of Beeville Jones.
