Central Texas is in for a treat today: Temperatures are expected to drop below the 100-degree mark and there’s a chance for rain.
A high-pressure system that has lingered over the area for the last month is finally moving east, letting a weak cold front move in, said Joe Baskin, forecaster for the National Weather Service.
This morning, the service has received reports of light rain and sprinkles in the area, Baskin said.
The break comes as Camp Mabry posted the ninth straight day of triple-digit weather yesterday.
“The (rain) chances are better today and tomorrow than we have seen in quite some time,” Baskin said. “The high pressure is breaking down, leaving behind a cold front.”
The high is expected to reach the high 90s today, the service said.
We’ll also see a 20 percent chance for rain today, and those chances will increase to 40 percent tonight, Baskin said.
There’s also a chance that a line of storms could bring severe weather to the Hill Country after 4 p.m., Baskin said. That same system brought 80 mph winds to the Abilene area last night, he said.
