Lake Travis levels are dropping daily. Anyone that has been out to Lake Travis this year from May to July can tell you that the lake is down and dropping quickly. Large catfish are known to take advantage of the shrinking waters and patrol the banks at night for fish disoriented and misplaced. Sunfish that use the smaller creeks and inlets are now forced out into the main body of water as the levels drop. This gives the larger predators an advantage. Big catfish instinctively step up their patrols when the levels drop.
Lake Travis holds it’s share of large catfish and they are out there every evening waiting for you to give them a meal they cannot refuse. Arrive an hour or so before dark to set up and catch your bait. Sunfish or bluegills can be caught with earthworms or with a fly rod and a small fly. A few of these fish in a bucket and you are in business. Use one bluegill close to the bottom and another on a bobber a few feet under the surface. Big cats are actively seeking out these fish that appear misplaced by the low water conditions. So sit back next to a good friend in your lawn chair and enjoy the cooler temperatures that nighttime provides. Keep one eye on your rods. It is highly likely that the biggest fish of your life is on the prowl and you have a midnight snack with his name on it. So while recreation boaters are singing the low water blues you too can be singing about the low water blue’s … Blue Catfish that is.
This method is a great way to catch up with an old friend. Sitting in a lawn chair waiting for a big bite seems to help melt away the stress and simplify life down to a couple friends enjoying the quietness that only nighttime by the lake can provide. It does not affect the pocketbook greatly. A little gas, a box of worms and a few refreshments and you are in business. Never have time to spend time with your friends? Never caught a big catfish? Never experienced one of our great sunsets? Well you can sleep in the winter and hit the lake this summer and you just might check a few of these off your list.
