The Lake Travis football team is back on the practice field, aiming for an unprecedented 5th straight state championship.
The Cavaliers will have three weeks together for spring workouts, and head coach Hank Carter hopes they will be productive. He needs to fill several key positions vacated by last season's seniors.
The most notable change is at quarterback. Lake Travis won their two most recent titles with Michael Brewer, who was a natural successsor to their other two-time champion, Garrett Gilbert. Now, the competition is much more open.
Senior-to-be Colin Lagasse has the most varsity experience of the candidates. He started in place of an injured Brewer for three games last season, going 2-1 with his only loss to eventual 4A Division-II state champion Aledo. He also played on defense and special teams as a junior. Junior-to-be Baker Mayfield and sophomore-to-be Bear Fenimore are also vying for the quarterback job after starting on sub-varsity teams in 2010.
"It's probably a little different scenario than we've had at Lake Travis in a while," said Carter. "There's kind of been the next guy ready to go. I feel great about all three kids that we have competing for the varsity job. Spring ball will help sort that thing out."
"This is just a new team," said Lagasse. "So, I guess it's a fresh start for us. This bunch hasn't had a chance to prove what they can do yet. So, I would see it as a fresh start, but we're also building from last year and the year's before from winning the last state championship."
Lake Travis' spring practice ends on Friday, May 27 with their intrasquad scrimmage. Aledo snapped their 47-game win streak last September, but the Cavaliers went on to beat Denton Ryan 27-7 at Cowboys Stadium for their 4th consecutive title.
"We just need to accomplish getting our team chemistry together and getting everything right and get used to playing with each other," said receiver Griffin Gilbert.
