At an emotion-filled Region IV track and field meet, McCallum's Nadiyah El-Amin dedicated her two gold medals to the memory of a former teammate while Dripping Springs senior Bailey Johnson earned her fourth straight trip to state by winning the 300-meter hurdles on an injured knee.

El-Amin fought back tears Tuesday as she described her successful afternoon. She dedicated her first-place finishes in the Class 4A girls 100 and 200 meters to the memory of Halle Brent, who died in 2009 from a brain stem tumor.

"I know she would be cheering for me right now," El-Amin said after winning the 100 in 12.25 seconds, a step ahead of Port Lavaca Calhoun's Melina Ortiz (12.48).

El-Amin, a senior, won her second gold medal about two hours later, blitzing the 200 meters in 24.94 seconds and beating Cedar Park's Kaitlin Meyer, who also qualified for the Class 4A state meet that takes place May 13 at Myers Stadium in Austin.

"Now I want to push for the gold (at state)," El-Amin said.

Like El-Amin, Dripping Springs' Colt Johnson won two events at Alamo Stadium. Johnson, a senior, ran like a quarter horse while capturing the 4A boys 110- and 300-meter hurdles. In one of the meet's most exciting finishes, he won the 300 hurdles in 38.68 seconds, just ahead of Gregory-Portland's Christian Ross (38.69).

Bailey Johnson, who's no relation to Colt, shattered her Region IV meet record by winning the 4A girls 300 hurdles in 43.34 seconds, beating Cody McCrary of Lake Travis (44.76) to the finish line. Johnson had set the previous record of 44.60 during her sophomore season in 2009.

She won Tuesday despite running with a torn meniscus in her right knee that will require surgery after the state meet. Bailey Johnson injured herself during a basketball game in December, and an MRI taken in April revealed that the meniscus was still torn.

When told the injury would not worsen if she competed, the Oklahoma State-bound Johnson elected to run. She did not want to miss a chance to compete at state during her senior year.

"I feel so relieved," she said.

Johnson, who said she does not feel any pain when she runs, called her latest effort in the 300 hurdles "one of the cleanest races" she had run in high school.

LBJ put its stamp on the meet while winning a pair of golds in the 4A girls 400- and 800-meter relays. The team of senior Kierra White, sophomores Jazmin Ochoa and Destini Gorrer and freshman Alaeh Horne looked loose and content after their second victory.

What makes LBJ's relay team so succesful?

"We're all goofy," Gorrer said, "and we hang out together."

Keeley Wagner of Lake Travis punctuated a strong meet for the Cavaliers by winning the 4A girls 100-meter hurdles in 14.88 seconds, a meet record. Her time broke the previous mark (15.08) set last year by Killeen's Bria McIver.

Wagner said she was cheered on by her grandparents, Larry and Susan Bailey, who drove from Gibbon, Neb., to watch the meet. The Baileys, who are farmers, took a break from planting corn to make the trip.

Rouse High, which opened its doors in 2008, won the 4A girls 1,600-meter relay behind the team of Marissa Naab, Allison Agbasoga, Adriana Reyes and Justin Franklin.

New Braunfels Canyon won the Class 4A girls team title with 65 points. Cedar Park and Lake Travis tied for second with 54.
