A special permit was granted to Lakeway Plaza Partners on Feb. 22 to allow a Starbucks drive-thru to operate at 2410 10 RR 620 in Lakeway Town Center. Council members brought up concerns about traffic, but city staff believed it would not adversely affect traffic on RR 620.

Statewide warrant roundup

On March 5 a statewide warrant roundup began. Within City of Lakeway limits, those with warrants out for their arrest will get a notice on their door warning them that they need to settle the amount owed to the city or risk being arrested. Volunteers from the Citizen Academy alumni will also be calling individuals with a script to notify those with warrants.

“About 95 percent of our warrants are the bail amount set, so those on the list are not necessarily convicted,” Lakeway Judge Kevin Madison said.
Lake Travis economic study

http://impactnews.com/images/stories/LTW/2011/03/11-pic1.jpgThe Lakeway City Council approved increasing its contribution from $3,000 to $5,000 for a study Travis County is initiating on the economic impact of Lake Travis. After City Manager Steve Jones found that most cities along Travis County were contributing $5,000 to the study, he suggested the council consider a higher investment. The base price for the study is $112,000 but could go up to $128,000.

While staff and council members have varying opinions on what they believe the outcome of the study will be, as a whole, the group said it would be a good tool for the community to use in policy making.

“One of the arguments we make a lot is it costs [local businesses] money having lower lake levels, but this would give us more substantial evidence,” Jones said. “The preliminary look is that the economic impact around Lake Travis is much larger than the rice farmers, which I never would have imagined.”

Drive-thru for burgers

Locally owned Hat Creek Burgers asked the West Lake Hills City Council for an amendment to West Lake Hill’s Code to allow a drive-thru in the Business 2 District.

The amendment would allow Hat Creek to have a drive-thru at the former Pots and Plants Garden Center lot at the corner of Capital of Texas Hwy. and Bee Caves Road. The council’s concern was additional traffic. A traffic consultant hired by Hat Creek did not believe it would add additional traffic compared to Pots and Plants’ use.

Hat Creek Burgers owner Drew Gressett is an Eanes ISD almuni.

Tree removal violations

The West Lake Hills City Council postponed a decision Feb. 23 concerning the illegal removal of trees in the city.

General contractor Frank West explained that none of his subcontractors were instructed to cut down trees while working on a property on Redbud Lane. Though only four trees were marked for removal, 44 were cut down by the time West returned.

“It was my fault and I take responsibility, but I meant no malice,” he said.

West Lake Hills is known to have strict tree-cutting restrictions. The city requires a variance to remove trees of 14 inches or more and each violation can result in a fee of up to $2,000.

The council voted to postpone the vote until a plan is developed to replace the 497 inches worth of trees.
