The Marble Falls Mustangs (4-4, 2-2 District 25-4A) will host the Lake
Travis Cavaliers tonight at Mustang Stadium in their last home game of
the 2010 season.
Cedar Park (8-0, 4-0), Lake Travis (7-1, 4-0) and Vista Ridge (7-2, 3-2)
have all wrapped up playoff eligibility, and the district’s fourth spot
is the only one still open. Multiple teams still have a chance at the
final postseason position, with Marble Falls having the most realistic
chances of all. A win tonight against Lake Travis, or a win next week
against Vandegrift puts the Mustangs in the playoffs for the first time
since 1998.
The Lake Travis Cavaliers have had a very good season with a few bumps
in the road, but a week three loss to Aledo was the most glaring fault.
Injuries to many key players — including Texas Tech signee quarterback
Michael Brewer — kept the Cavs on the ropes and in tight games through
week four, but since district play began in week five the Cavs have
outscored their opponents 204-21 in four games.
Griffin Gilbert is the Cavs’ biggest weapon at receiver. He missed a
game due to injury and still has piled up 706 yards receiving on 50
catches. His mass of catches is the only thing that ranks him ahead of
Mustang receiver David Morgan who leads the district in total yards,
yards per catch and touchdowns.
Brewer has had a short season, only four games, but he is averaging over
300 yards passing per game and has thrown 13 touchdowns and only two
interceptions. The Cavalier defense isn’t the best run stopping crew,
but their pass defense has proven to be very solid and allows only 78
yards per game.
