http://www.statesman.com/multimedia/dynamic/00540/LT_Aledo_1_540016c.jpgFor the first time in nearly three years, the Lake Travis fans sulked toward the exits with time remaining on the clock.

For the first time in 49 games, the tears in the Lake Travis football players' eyes expressed sorrow instead of joy.

For the first time in 1,099 days, there were no signs of celebration on the Lake Travis sideline. In their place were hugs of condolence.

For the first time in a while, the Lake Travis Cavaliers walked off the field as losers.

Johnathan Gray scored a touchdown with six minutes remaining Friday night to lift Aledo to a 14-10 victory over Lake Travis. The loss snapped a 48-game winning streak for Lake Travis, which hadn't fallen since a 28-21 defeat by Westlake on Sept. 7, 2007.

"It's definitely a different feeling," Lake Travis defensive end Shaquille Marable said. "We're not going to let one loss stop us."

Lake Travis was forced to play the game without quarterback Michael Brewer, a Texas Tech commit who was out with a shoulder injury. However, the Cavaliers jumped to a 10-0 lead with 4:20 left in the second quarter.

Aledo took advantage of a roughing-the-passer penalty to score in the first half's waning minutes but neither team was able to do much in the third quarter.

Still facing a three-point deficit, Aledo began the game-winning drive on the Lake Travis 40 with 10:21 to go. The Bearcats ran off 10 plays — nine of them running plays — and Gray scored on a fourth-and-goal from the 1.

Lake Travis got the ball to the Aledo 47 on the ensuing drive but a false start penalty and a sack of quarterback Colin Lagasse forced the Cavaliers to punt with 3:53 remaining. The Cavaliers' defense was unable to get a stop and Aledo converted two third down conversions on the game's final drive. Facing a third-and-5 with 2:43 remaining, Gray ended all hopes of a Lake Travis comeback with an eight-yard gain.

"We just had to get first (downs) to win," Aledo quarterback Matthew Bishop said. "We just kept pounding it in there and they couldn't stop us."

"We just didn't come out with the same intensity," Marable said of the fourth quarter. "They came out with a little more, trying to prove a point."

Lagasse — a junior who is normally found in the Cavaliers' secondary — filled in at quarterback Friday and got Lake Travis on the scoreboard on two of its first three drives, as the team abandoned its pass-heavy offense for a more balanced attack.

Lake Travis, which had passed the ball on 58 percent of its plays prior to this game, ran the ball on 19 of 31 first-half plays.

"It was working pretty good," said Lagasse, who put Lake Travis up 10-0 with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Griffin Gilbert.

But Lake Travis' offense stalled after halftime, and the Cavaliers mustered only 45 yards of offense in the final two quarters.

Aledo, the defending Class 4A, Division II champion, extended its winning streak to 16 games .

Lake Travis suffered its first home loss since a 42-25 outcome against Marble Falls on Nov. 3, 2006.
