What: This expansive one-story house in the Herman Brown section of Tarrytown has been completely rebuilt. The original house on the site was built in the late 1960s.
The old house had an indoor pool with columns and a classical motif.
During the exhaustive renovation, the pool was removed, the interior of the home gutted and the house reconstructed. It has new electrical, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning systems and a new roof. WoodEye Construction & Design was the general contractor; Garland Turner is the owner of WoodEye.
"It's basically a new house," Turner said. "It does have the original foundation, and the bricks were taken off and reused, but everything else is new."
The bricks Turner mentioned were originally from the Old Main Building on the University of Texas campus. Some large wooden ceiling beams were also retained; these exposed beams are now in the family room next to the kitchen. The family room and kitchen are where the pool used to be.
The house is on a quiet cul-de-sac near Scenic Drive and Lake Austin. Two of the most striking elements in the home are the massive steel-and-glass doors and windows, which were built on-site, and the gleaming Brazilian cherry floors. There are floor-to-ceiling windows in several areas, allowing in plenty of natural light and views of the green areas outside.
"We had the opportunity to update it, and to combine a traditional presence on the street with a contemporary look on the inside," Turner said. "We tried to keep the spaces as timeless as possible."
Steel built-in bookcases and steel fireplace surrounds add to the dramatic effect.
There are many types of stone in the house. The kitchen walls are honed black granite, and the top of the built-in cabinets are made of Portuguese limestone. The kitchenette and bathroom have lava rock counters.
The house has four bedrooms, 4 1/2 bathrooms and 5,868 square feet.
