Cavaliers waiting to see if Brewer can play tonight against Aledo
On the eve of Lake Travis' showdown against Aledo, the status of Cavaliers senior quarterback Michael Brewer remained uncertain, coach Hank Carter said Thursday.
The Cavaliers might not know if Brewer will play until he warms up for tonight's home game. Both teams are unbeaten and Lake Travis is the defending Class 4A, Division I state champion, while Aledo is the defending 4A, Division II state champ.
"I'm sure Michael would want to play, no matter what," Carter said. "Ultimately, it will be up to him. If he's OK to play, he'll play. If not, he won't."
Carter said he would not want to risk further injury to Brewer, who took a hard hit to his shoulder last week in a 34-24 victory over Hendrickson. Brewer's father, Robert, said his son is "day-to-day" regarding his playing status.
If Brewer cannot play, the Cavs will be directed on offense by senior Garrett Noak, who quarterbacked the JV black team last season. Receiver Tanner Gillette also missed half of last week's game with a pulled groin, and another receiver, Alex Matthews, has been slowed by a hamstring injury.
With senior wideout Conner Floyd out eight to 10 weeks with a broken leg suffered in the opener against Westlake, Griffin Gilbert (17 catches, 274 yards) has become Lake Travis' top receiving threat.
