Summer is often a time for which school children long. However, for a number of kids in the Lake Travis area, summertime can often mean going hungry.
“When school is out, it really stretches budgets and makes it tough on families to feed everybody,” President of Lake Travis Labor of Love Michelle Zogas said.
Zogas and a few of her friends met in 2008 to start LTlov, a non-profit organization working to improve life by empowering women and families in the Lake Travis area. The group's projects have included Operation Green Santa, Pajama Party, Therapeutic Horsemanship and shoe and school supplies drives.
LTlov first delivered lunches to hungry children on Presidents Day earlier this year. They said it was such a success, they decided to continue the program in the summer. Zogas started a blog, http://summerlunches.blogspot.com, asking people to sign up for a delivery day.
“We had no problem getting 100 lunches donated every single day,” said Zogas. “The Ladies of Charity ended up partnering with Emmaus Church and took every Thursday. A teacher at the high school really stepped up and drove the truck, which was a Mobile Loaves and Fishes truck on loan from Lake Hills Church.”
A minimum of 100 lunches filled the stomachs of children each day this summer. Zogas credits the generosity of the Lake Travis community for the more than 6,000 lunches that were donated and delivered while school was out.
“The daily coming together of neighbors and the generous way people shared their lives and gratitude was an exceptional look at what true community looks like,” Zogas said.
Each lunch contained a sandwich, chips, dessert, fruit, a snack and juice or water. The group, while wanting to do something special for these kids, worked to maintain healthy guidelines and keep all lunches basically the same.
Zogas said one young boy told her, “Man, I can’t believe I got to eat every day this summer.”
School is now in session, but LTlov is still working to help those in need in the Lake Travis area. For more information on the organization, visit www.ltlov.org.
