Amy Neal slammed 11 kills as unbeaten Lake Travis swept San Antonio Lady Bird Johnson 27-25, 25-13 in the finals of the 28-team Westwood Warrior Showcase.
The Cavaliers improved to 10-0 on the season with nine wins in three days at Westwood following their season-opening win over Seguin. Lake Travis beat San Antonio Reagan 25-23, 25-19 in one semifinal, while Johnson beat Waco Midway 24-26, 25-23, 25-9. Reagan beat Midway 27-25, 25-15 for third place.
"We can always improve, but honestly, we are playing very well right now," Lake Travis coach Julie Green said. "Our blocks are good and libero Mackenzie Mayo is just lights-out defensively, which really keeps our offense in the attack mode,"
Lady Bird Johnson played evenly with the Cavaliers in game one and took a 13-10 lead with a 4-0 scoring run led by Analisse Shannon and Carnae Dillard. But Lake Travis rallied and tied the game at 21.
The score was tied at 22, 23 and 24 before the Cavaliers got a thunderous kill by Neal for point 26 and an overpass kill by Taylor Smith for game point.
Lake Travis held a narrow 5-3 lead in game two before going on a 13-3 run to take control.
During the surge, nine straight free balls from Johnson were transitioned into kills by the opportunistic Cavaliers offense.
Neal was voted the tournament's most valuable player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Sierra Patrick and setter Katie Beals. The Cavaliers' Piper Toler and Claire McCown also played well throughout the three-day event.
