Elite Wellness Chiropractic & Acupuncture wanted to help local students by joining a larger organization holding a supply drive. The problem was, no other organization was having one.

“This is an effluent area so not everyone realizes that there are a lot of needy children here,” Robin Moallem, chiropractic assistant with Elite Wellness, said.

Finding no existing school supply drive, Elite Wellness decided to immediately take action.

“We started one ourselves, and got other organizations involved,” Moallem said.

They named the drive PackaBackpack and recruited Lake Travis Labor of Love and the Bee Cave Rotary to help.

Lake Travis ISD Healthy Lifestyles Coordinator Kathleen Hassenfratz is working with the organizations to determine the amount of need. Approximately 600 students across eight campuses will receive supplies, Hassenfratz said. She said the children are chosen using the free and reduced lunch list and by school officials knowing the needs of individual students and their families. The counselors and principals of the schools will deliver the backpacks to the students in a confidential manner the first week of school.

“A good part of the success is being educated and having the materials that you need,” Michelle Zogas, president of LTlov, said. “Being able to make these materials available to these kids is a good step in getting them on the road to success.”

Both Elite Wellness and LTlov are very active when it comes to community service.

“We are always trying to get out in the community and give back in any way we can,” Moallem said.

Despite both operating in a fairly small community, this is the first time the two operations have worked together on a project, but it may not be the last. “I think that if this is a success,” Zogas said, “there is a very good chance this could become a yearly project.”
