What is up with all the flies this year? I thought it was only
my house, but my neighbors and friends also have had an invasion. They
seem to be coming in waves just a few, then swarms. What is the reason?
Though there have not been any reports of a widespread fly invasion, the onset of warmer temperatures, possibly with some help from the rain we received earlier in the summer, is probably the culprit, according to entomologist Wizzie Brown of the Texas Agrilife Extension Service. Flies typically reproduce on decomposing organic matter, and the rain could make that matter even more hospitable, Brown adds. That, combined with the fact that warmer temperatures speed up fly life cycles, could have you working overtime with the swatter.
To reduce the number of flies buzzing around your house, pick up animal feces in your yard, keep garbage cans away from entrances and make sure screens are intact.
