7-on-7 Football: Chances dwindling for state hopefuls

The clock is ticking for several 7-on-7 State Tournament regulars that have failed to qualify and are facing a shrinking number of opportunities.

Teams like Baytown Lee (10 state appearances, including four straight), A&M Consolidated (nine overall, two straight), Cy Falls (eight overall, three straight), Cinco Ranch (seven overall, five straight) and Cy Creek (eight overall) are accustomed to already owning a state berth by this point, and there’s only three area events remaining at The Woodlands and A&M Consolidated on Saturday, and at Dulles next week.

The rest of the South Division state qualifying tournaments are at San Antonio Alamo Heights, Lufkin and Sharyland on June 20, and at Hays Consolidated in Buda on June 27.

“It’s getting more-and-more competitive every year in 7-on-7,” The Woodlands assistant coach and SQT director Chris Sowda said. “At times in the early years, it was like taking candy from a baby for some of the top teams, but it’s just not that way anymore, and with just a few tournaments left, some of the teams that usually qualify are going to be left out.”

Baytown Lee, Cy Falls and Cinco Ranch are at The Woodlands, while Cy Creek plays at A&M Consolidated on Saturday.

Two other longtime state qualifiers — Tyler Lee (10 appearances in a row) and Lufkin (nine straight) — are also competing at College Station.

Stratford defeated Seven Lakes in last week’s Cinco Ranch SQT finals with both teams being added to the state field.

It’s the seventh berth for Stratford, which was added to the state bracket late last season when Hastings decided not to participate.

“There are a lot of really good teams out there, and 7-on-7 is a big part of Houston high school football,” Stratford coach Eliot Allen said. “It’s more of a challenge to advance than even a year or two ago.”

Stratford downed host Cinco Ranch, and Seven Lakes stopped Katy Taylor in last week’s semifinals.

With A&M Consolidated and The Woodlands both hosting SQTs on Saturday, A&M Consolidated will not be able to defend its championship at The Woodlands.

A&M Consolidated beat Spring in last year’s championship game at The Woodlands.

Cy-Fair and Tyler Lee were the state qualifiers at last season’s A&M Consolidated SQT (Tyler Lee decided not to play the finals and forfeited to Cy-Fair).

“This will be the first time we haven’t played at The Woodlands because before this year our tournaments were on different weekends,” A&M Consolidated assistant coach and SQT director Ray Cavanaugh said. “We’re one of those teams still trying to get in, so these late-season tournaments can get really intense.

“We’re getting a lot more calls from teams trying to get into tournaments because time really is running out.”

The 64-team Division I (Class 5A and 4A) state tournament is July 10-11 at Texas A&M University in College Station. The field includes 32 South Division teams and 32 from the North.

State qualifiers scheduled to compete this week include The Woodlands, Klein, Tomball and Cy-Fair at The Woodlands, while Seven Lakes, Bellaire and Austin Lake Travis play at A&M Consolidated.

Those teams will not advance out of pool play.
