So much rain has fallen across Central Texas, the Lower Colorado River Authority opened floodgates at two dams Thursday.

It’s because of the persistent rain the last two days that the LCRA decided to open up a floodgate at Starcke Dam at Lake Marble Falls and another at Wirtz Dam.

Water rushed out of the gates, causing the river water below to become rough.

Eventually, the added water from the opening of the floodgate, along with healthy rainfall amount across the area, will allow Lake Travis to rise, possibly to its average February level.

“The February averages about 668 and we're around 665, a little over 665 and a half,” said Bob Rose, LCRA meteorologist.   “And it's continuing to climb.  So it's very likely that we'll reach that February average very quickly.”

Both floodgates were expected to be closed later on Thursday.
