On July 25, 2010 at approximately 4:18 p.m., members of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol Unit responded to the vicinity of Starnes Island on Lake Travis on a report of a missing individual. According to information received by the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the individual had been on a party barge with several other patrons.

The individual jumped off of the party barge and into the water with a flotation device wrapped around his waist. Apparently the flotation device slipped off of the individual and he went under and did not resurface.

Divers from LCRA and EMS also responded the scene and were able to recover the body of the missing individual. Attempts to resuscitate the individual were unsuccessful and the individual was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel at approximately 5:01 pm.

It was estimated that the individual was under the water for approximately 50 minutes when he was recovered.

The missing individual was identified as Paul Mathis, 32.

Mr. Mathis was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy was performed. Findings of the autopsy will not be released at this time and are pending the results of a toxicology report.
