Lake Travis might have to make some room in its trophy case.

Lake Travis, which won state championships in football and volleyball during the fall, is in contention for the Class 4A boys and girls golf championships. After the opening day at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course, the Lake Travis boys lead their tournament while the girls are in second place.

Lake Travis’ quintet of Joe Beck, Tayler Termeer, Klein Klotz, Brandon Pederson and Austin Sholtis shot a score of 302 on the first day and the Cavaliers will head into Tuesday’s final round with a five-shot lead over Highland Park and a 10-shot lead over Wolfforth Frenship.

Beck shot a 73 over the opening 18 holes while Termeer and Klotz each shot 75. Northwest Nelson’s Major Monzingo tops Class 4A’s individual leaderboard after shooting an opening-round 71.

After the first round of the Class 4A girls tournament, Lake Travis is six strokes behind Montgomery. Julia Beck, who is Joe Beck’s younger sister, has a one-shot lead over Highland Park’s Callie Scheffler on the individual leaderboard.

At the Roy Kizer Golf Course-hosted Class 2A tournament, Cameron Yoe’s Emily Fuchs finished the first round in fifth place. Fuchs, who shot an 85 and led Cameron Yoe to a fourth place finish, is 10 shots behind Sonora’s Elizabeth Chavarria.
