The National Hurricane Center raised the chance of tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico to 40% on Thursday, tracking a system in the Bay of Campeche that could bring heavy rain to Central Texas this weekend. The disturbance, showing increased organization, may become a tropical depression or weak tropical storm before hitting South Texas and Mexico by Friday afternoon.

In Austin, rain bands are expected from Friday night into Saturday, with potential for flash flooding due to heavy downpours, though widespread inland flooding is unlikely. Rainfall totals may reach one inch, with some areas seeing over two inches. Unlike Tropical Storm Barry, which caused severe flooding, this system carries less moisture and won’t linger.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Erin in the Atlantic is expected to become a hurricane by Friday and possibly a major hurricane by Sunday, but it will likely stay over open waters due to high pressure systems.
