Rexanna’s Foundation is holding its third annual Lone Star Huddle Up Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at The Salt Lick Pavilion, 18300 FM 1826, in Driftwood. The event is held in conjunction with lung cancer awareness month.

The fundraiser will raise money that goes to lung cancer research at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, scholarships to students affected by lung cancer and T.E.A.M., an anti-tobacco program in local schools. Texas-based Rexanna’s Foundation has raised more than $140,000 for lung cancer research in the past two years.

Tickets to the Lone Star Huddle Up are $50, which includes Salt Lick barbecue and music by the Lake Travis Fiddlers and Rick Treviño. For more information, visit www.rexannasfoundation.org.

Lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined but raising awareness is often difficult as most who get lung cancer die, leaving few survivors to pursue the cause. Only 15 percent of people diagnosed with lung cancer live for five years. For breast cancer, that number is 88 percent.

Former Lake Travis Middle School athletic director Rexanna Hawkins, 49, died in 2006 from the disease, just two months after her diagnosis. Rexanna inspired her doctor, Dr. Daniel Karp, at M.D. Anderson, who now serves on the foundation’s board.
