All wildfire evacuation orders for Possum Kingdom Lake residents are now lifted. KERA's BJ Austin says residents are returning after more than a week.

Officials say the Possum Kingdom fire destroyed 167 homes and 24 additional structures. And the threat is not over, even though weekend rains dropped one to four inches in the area. David Boyd is with the Incident Command Post in Mineral Wells.

Boyd: This rain really helped us with this fire, but Texas, in West Texas, is still so dry that there's still going to be a high fire danger in those areas.

Boyd says the threat of a lightning strike during spring thunderstorms igniting a new fire in the Possum Kingdom area is a real possibility. He says homeowners who return must be alert and ready to respond. He also says charred trees could topple in the high winds, and that's a hazard. The Possum Kingdom fire is now about 70% contained.
