Austin Water, in collaboration with the Lower Colorado River Authority, Austin Watershed, and commercial oil and gas industry experts, conducted a comprehensive emergency oil spill drill on Lake Austin to bolster response capabilities for potential contamination threats. The exercise, held near the Ullrich Water Treatment Plant close to the plant's raw water intakes by Tom Miller Dam, simulated a major oil spill scenario to test and refine multi-agency coordination and emergency protocols. This proactive training underscores the ongoing commitment to safeguarding Austin's vital water resources against environmental hazards, ensuring rapid and effective intervention in real-world crises.

During the drill, teams deployed floating booms and containment barriers to simulate spill containment, tracked the hypothetical flow of contaminants, and practiced recovery operations—all without releasing any actual pollutants into the water. The session highlighted the importance of seamless inter-agency collaboration, equipping participants with enhanced skills for diverse contingencies. "This is a great opportunity for our teams to practice emergency scenarios involving a multi-agency joint response," noted Austin Water Director Shay Ralls Roalson. "These training exercises strengthen our emergency protocols and help Austin Water staff prepare for a range of contingencies."
