The Boerne Champion girls soccer team punched its ticket to the Region IV-4A tournament with a 2-0 victory over Lake Travis Tuesday night in Austin.

Before the Chargers could focus on the regional tournament, they had to get past Lake Travis, a team that had defeated them earlier in the year, 1-0.

Even though Champion had lost to the Lady Cavs, Chargers coach Samara Weinstein liked her team's chances against Lake Travis. In the first meeting, she said they controlled the field of play, but not the scoreboard. On Tuesday, they did both.

"The first time we met we didn't play up to our potential, but we're peaking and have come together," she said.

Cassie Lange found a crack in defense early and put the Chargers up 1-0 in the first five minutes. It stayed that way until halftime, but mid-way through the second half, Julie Essick converted a penalty kick after Madeline Bly was taken down in the box.

"It helped that we had seen them and knew what to expect from them," Weinstein said. "The only scary part is that it's the playoffs and everybody is pumped up."

The regional tournament will take place on a grass surface at Cabaniss Field. Weinstein said it shouldn't bother her team since they played two tournaments and a district game, plus several other non-district games on grass.

"We've played on grass quite a bit this year," she said about her team which is 16-1-7 and has won 12 straight.
