To celebrate its centennial anniversary, the UIL has asked fans to vote on the greatest high school athletes from the state of Texas.

Just don’t expect to see former Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert on the all-UIL football team.

Gilbert was left off the UIL’s 31-person quarterback ballot as were notable area alums like Westlake’s Drew Brees, Lake Travis’ Todd Reesing and Burnet’s Stephen McGee. In fact, the only quarterback from the Central Texas area to appear on the ballot is Rogers’ Patrick Hutka.

Gilbert, now a freshman at the University of Texas, currently owns four state passing records and set five records during his three-year varsity career. The two-time Central Texas Player of the Year had a 39-4 record as a starter and led Lake Travis to state championships in 2007 and 2008.

Gilbert can still make the team as a write-in candidate.

Jordan Shipley, who set three state records during his career as a wide receiver at Burnet, is one of 17 Central Texas players on the ballot. Former Lake Travis wideout Jason Bird, who set the single-season receptions mark in 2007, and Ross Evans, a former kicker at Burnet who is second on the state’s all-time field goals chart, were among those players who were omitted.
