Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound while Spider-Man can shoot webs that snare criminals .

Wyatt Church can throw pitches and hit them, too .

Church further established himself as a postseason hero for Lake Travis' baseball team on Friday night, throwing a complete game at the Blossom Center to lead the Cavaliers to a 2-1 victory over Corpus Christi Calallen.

Church also provided hits that led to both of Lake Travis' runs.

"It's been unreal," said Church, whose team took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Class 4A, Region IV championship series. "I couldn't ask for a better year, my senior year. It's a dream come true."

Normally the team's starting center fielder, the left-handed Church had been called upon in the playoffs to pitch the deciding third games of Lake Travis' playoff series against Crockett, Dripping Springs and Corpus Christi Moody. Church picked up the win in all three games.

Before he boarded the team bus for San Antonio on Friday afternoon, Church was told he would start against Calallen, which had eliminated the Cavaliers from the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. Lake Travis coach Roy Kinnan opted for Church over Brad Kuntz, a Baylor signee who had started the first game of the Cavaliers' previous four playoff series.

The Cavaliers' No. 3 starter retired the first eight batters he faced. Through five innings, he had allowed two infield hits and Tanner Vandeveer's home run.

In the sixth, Church escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam , and he retired the final three batters to end the game.

"I just have confidence in my team," said Church, who struck out the last two batters. "They are going to back me up; I just had to throw strikes."

Church hit a two-out double in the third inning before singling in the sixth . Austin Lee pinch ran for Church both times and scored twice .

The Cavaliers, who have never advanced to the state tournament, will try to finish off Calallen when they return to the Blossom Center at 4:30 p.m. today . Kinnan said Kuntz will start Game 2 for Lake Travis.
