Denton Ryan’s Scotty Young is within reach of a state record that is currently owned by a well-known Central Texas quarterback.

Entering this weekend’s game against Denton Guyer, Young (pictured on the near right) has passed for 4,162 yards and is 692 yards short of the single-season record set last year by former Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who is pictured on the far right. Averaging 320.2 yards a game, Young may have to reach the state championship to break the record and a possible opponent in the state title game for Denton Ryan (12-1) could be Lake Travis, which plays Alamo Heights this weekend.

Young, who has verbally committed to Texas Tech, is also seven touchdown passes shy of Graham Harrell’s record of 67 touchdown passes in a season.

If Young does break the single-season passing yards record, Gilbert won’t be the only Central Texas alum to fall out of the state record books. Earlier this season, former Burnet quarterback Stephen McGee was knocked out of the top 5 on the Class 3A career passing yardage chart by Gilmer’s Darian Godfrey.
