If it felt like winter in Austin today, it looked like winter across much of north and east Texas.

As much as six inches of snow fell today across an area including Dallas, Tyler and Sulphur Springs, said Joe Baskin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Also, the front spawned a tornado near the South Texas city of Alice.

About 200 flights, or a quarter of the schedule, were canceled at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in anticipation of the weather, according to the Associated Press.

The rain in Austin is expected to taper off. “We had a pretty good downpour last night that brought around one and a half inches of rain, which we haven’t had since early September,” Baskin said.

Tonight will be in the low 30s but a freeze is not expected, he said. Another front expected to hit the area Monday night could bring much colder temperatures, but snow and severe weather is not expected, Baskin said.
