Jan Jernberg’s retirement didn’t last for very long.

Less than two months after he retired from the Lake Travis basketball program, Jernberg has been named the head coach at St. Dominic Savio. Jernberg accepted the job on Wednesday and he will meet with the Eagle players and parents this afternoon.

“I recognized right off that when basketball season rolls around, I (will) still have a fire burning,” Jernberg said. “This is just a rejuvenation opportunity to stay in it and stay actively involved.”

Jernberg said that he lives only two or three miles away from St. Dominic Savio’s campus and that location was attractive to him. Jernberg will also not teach any classes at the North Austin private school so his part-time status will allow him to keep his retirement benefits from the Lake Travis school district.

The 64-year-old Jernberg has compiled a career record of 667-433 over 34 seasons. In 14 years with Lake Travis, Jernberg won 302 games and during the 2009-10 season, he guided the Cavaliers to the Class 4A state tournament and won the All-Central Texas Coach of the Year award.
