A WATCH LIST
1. Will Lake Travis defend its championship?
Last
summer, Lake Travis won its first state passing tournament
championship, and the Cavaliers went on to win a fourth straight 11-man
football title in the fall.
Wide receiver Conner Floyd — who
caught four touchdown passes in last year's 7-on-7 Division I final —
and quarterback Michael Brewer have graduated, but whoever takes the
snaps this week, either senior Colin Lagasse or junior Baker Mayfield,
will have two viable receiving options in Griffin Gilbert, a
6-foot-5-inch TCU commitment, and Dannon Cavil, a 6-3 junior.
2. How will Cameron Yoe and Lexington look?
Both
Cameron Yoe and Lexington had successful 2010 seasons that concluded
with championship game losses in Mansfield. Both teams will be in
College Station this week, but they will have significantly different
rosters. Yoe returns only four starters while Lexington welcomes back
six. Lexington does return quarterback Kogan Garrett, and Decrick
Westbrook, a third-team All-Central Texas utility pick last year, will
be a senior at Cameron Yoe this fall.
3. Can running teams succeed at a passing tournament?
McNeil,
Bowie and Hays all relied heavily on their running games last season,
but this week, those teams will have to turn to their quarterbacks, none
of whom passed for more than 1,100 yards last season. Bowie (senior
Robbie Dickey) and Hays (junior Caleb Kimbro) both will have a returning
starter under center while Zach Kuhn is expected to quarterback the
Mavericks.
4. Can St. Andrew's turn some heads?
The
Crusaders were 0-10 in 2010, and St. Andrew's has won only 12 games
over the past seven seasons. But Miami-bound QB Preston Dewey is one of
18 returning starters for St. Andrew's, which will compete in the
Division II pool this weekend. Today, the Crusaders will face Burnet, a
strong Class 3A team, along with Class 2A Boyd and Class A La Villa.
OFF TO DALLAS
While
16 Central Texas 7-on-7 teams will be competing in College Station this
week, LBJ and Stony Point will be playing in a passing tournament that
includes teams from Texas, Florida, Colorado and Minnesota. The Jaguars
and Tigers will be part of the Red Bull Game Breakers national
tournament at Southern Methodist University on Friday and Saturday.
