Two Central Texans Sign With Baylor Baseball

Baylor baseball will welcome seven student-athletes to the program, head coach Steve Smith announced Wednesday. The class is comprised of six high school athletes, all from Texas, as well as one transfer. The Bears’ class includes six pitchers and one infielder.

“We are very pleased and excited about this group,” Smith said. “As a group, this is a very talented class both on the field and in the classroom.”

The following will join Baylor’s baseball program in the fall of 2010: LHP Doug Ashby (McKinney, Texas; McKinney Boyd HS), RHP Tyler Bremer (Berkeley, Calif.;Yavapai College; UC Davis), RHP Trae Davis (Mexia, Texas; Mexia HS), LHP Brad Kuntz (Austin, Texas; Lake Travis HS), RHP Dillon Newman (Belton, Texas; Belton HS), IF Grayson Porter (Linden, Texas; McLeod HS) and RHP Sean Spicer (Dallas, Texas; J.J. Pearce HS).

Davis is ranked 27th in Texas and 215th nationally by Perfect Game Cross Checker.

Ashby is a four-year varsity letterwinner at McKinney Boyd and went 6-1, striking out 49 in 34.1 innings with the DBAT Mustangs this past summer.

Kuntz was named first-team all-district after helping guide Lake Travis to a 31-5 record. The lefty went 5-1, striking out 82 and giving up just 15 hits in 43.2 innings of work.

Newman is a three-time first-team all-district who recorded 80 strikeouts in 65.1 innings en route to an 8-4 mark for Belton this past season.

Porter hit .466 last season while recording 14 extra base hits, including six home runs for McLeod HS.

Spicer joins the Bears from J.J. Pearce, where he struck out 36 batters in 31.1 innings of work, earning second team all-district.

Bremer joins the Baylor program from Yavapai College after one year at UC Davis, where he went 3-1 with a 2.85 ERA, striking out 36 in 41.0 innings of work, including one complete-game shutout.

Baylor opens its 2010 season Feb. 19-21, hosting Georgia and Duke in the QTI Apparel’s Opening Weekend Classic at Baylor Ballpark.
