Mack runs to all-state honors for Firebirds

Devils Lake’s Travis Mack fulfilled his goal of a top 20 finish at the state cross country championship meet.

The Devils Lake senior ran a 16:47.14 to finish 17th on Saturday and earned all-state honors for the Firebirds.

Devils Lake scored 462 points and finished 15th in the team standings. The Firebirds finished 14th in the girls race after tallying 504 points.

Randii Widmer was the top finisher for Devils Lake in the girls race. She ran a 17:02.85 and finished 71st.

It was a near-perfect day for Bismarck, which claimed the title on both the boys and girls side of the meet. The Demons boys tallied 21 points (15 is a perfect score in cross country), while the BHS girls posted 32 points to win the crown.

Christian Brown Otter was the Class A boys champion for Bismarck. He covered the course in 15:38.64 and finished just over four seconds ahead of Century’s Brett Kelly.
The Demons placed a total of seven runners in the top nine in the race.

Bismarck put four runners in the top eight on the girls side on its way to the crown. Fargo South’s Tarin Lachowitzer was the individual champion, coming in with a time of 14:53.55. The Bruins finished second, well behind the Demons, with 79 points.
