Lake noise rules on the agenda

The Austin Police Department is asking the City Council today for permission to cite boaters on Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake for playing their tunes too loudly.

Police can cite motorists whose radios and other "sound equipment" can be heard more than 30 feet away. But the Police Department, which took over patrolling the lakes from the Austin Park Police a few years ago, says it doesn't have the authority to respond to complaints about loud music from noisy boaters.
