Highland Park boys win 3rd golf title since 2006

Charlie Ewing and Case Thornton each shot 73 to help Dallas Highland Park win its third state title since 2006 at the Class 4A boys state golf tournament in Austin.

Highland Park expanded a six-shot lead Tuesday after the first round with the lowest team score of the tournament at 303. The Scots finished at 612 at Roy Kizer Golf Course, 13 shots better than Lake Travis and Montgomery. Lake Travis won a playoff for second place.


Curtis Reed of Castroville Medina Valley won the 4A medalist title with the only sub-par total at 1-under 143.


The Montgomery girls defended their 4A title with a score of 620, seven shots better than Lake Travis. Montgomery trailed by a shot entering the final round but carded a tournament-best 301.


Taylor Newlin of Frisco Wakeland won the 4A girls medalist title at even-par 144.
