The Memorial Day Weekend at Lake Travis started off slow because of storms, but it is finishing strong.

A non-stop flow of trucks and SUVs line the Mansfield Dam boat launch - some going out for the day - others picking up boats after a long weekend on the water.

"Only about 15 minutes. Not too bad. The wardens are doing a pretty good job of keeping everybody in line," says Chance Campbell, a Lake Travis regular.

And 15 minutes is not a bad wait considering only two main boat launches were open at Lake Travis over the holiday weekend. Low lake levels have shut down most launches. But it hasn't shut down the fun.

"I think this is a perfect day. The weather is nice and warm, and the lake seems smooth," says Deanna Smith, who is boating with her family.

Beyond the hurried pace of the boat launch is the park filled with families. Many of them are enjoying the water.

"You get used to it. First it's cold, but you get used to it," says Pablo Zermeno.

Zermeno's family is spending the day at the lake to celebrate his brother's birthday.

"We have an air boat thingy. We're going to take it out over there," says Miguel Zermeno.

Travis County is hoping every child stays safe on the water this year. Last year, ten people drowned at Lake Travis. So officials launched a new program this weekend. Free loaner life vests for swimmers. And it's apparently doing well. By midday all 40 vests were being used.

Local businesses are busy as well. Boats and jet skis were going out as fast as they were being returned at a local rental shop. And the always popular Carlos 'n Charlie's, was full for lunch.

Despite lots of people on the lake, deputies say they haven't had any major problems.
