Higher lake levels means more boaters at Lake Travis and authorities are prepared to patrol.

If you head out to Lake Travis this weekend you likely won’t be alone.

“The most important thing people need to know is, do not take the water for granted,” said Brett Spicer of the Travis County Sheriff's Office Lake Patrol.

The agency is teaming up with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Bee Cave Police Department, Lakeway Police Department, Jonestown Police Department, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to make sure boaters are following the law.

--What You Need to Know:--

For starters, watercraft must have updated registration. Every vessel must have a fire extinguisher and boats must have floatation devices for everyone on board.

“The average lake depth is 40 feet, it has a maximum depth of 210 feet and once people slip under the water and they’re out of your sight that’s a bad day,” said Spicer.

Boaters are also required to stay at least 50 feet away from the shore and buoys. Colton Spencer, an employee at a local marina, said safety is a priority.

“My biggest thing is telling people common courtesy will get you through everyone is trying to have a good time," said Spencer.

Deputies say to not think of it as ruining a good time, rather making sure everyone who goes out makes it back home.
