Henderson Lions' quarterback Del Barnes, who passed for more than 400 yards and tossed four touchdown passes in a win over arch-rival Kilgore, was one of six student/athletes named Built Ford Tough Texas High School Players of the Week on Wednesday.

Joining Barnes as the week’s top players were Allen quarterback Alec Morris in 5A, Lake Travis quarterback Baker Mayfield in 4A, Hawley wingback/cornerback Bryce Devore in 2A, LaVilla kicker/quarterback A.J. Garza in 1A and Plano John Paul II quarterback Christian Boese for Private schools.

The award honors one student/athlete in six of the state’s athletic classifications each week during the high school football regular season for his accomplishments on and off the field.

Barnes completed 21 of 29 passes for 429 yards and four touchdowns in Henderson’s 35-7 win over Kilgore. He threw all four of his TD passes and had 361 yards through the air by halftime.

“Del is simply a high-character kid,” Henderson head coach Dickey Meeks said. “He’s a quiet leader who does a lot of listening and thinking. His major improvement this season has been his footwork in the pocket. Believe me, when he steps onto the field, the attitude of our team changes.”

Morris completed 25 of 35 passes for 365 yards and five touchdowns in No. 1 ranked Allen’s 42-34 win over Longview. The University of Alabama verbal pledge also rushed for one touchdown.

Mayfield completed 27 of 37 passes for 468 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-35 win over Aledo. he led Lake Travis to four scores on six second-half possessions to pull away from a 35-25 battle at halftime.

Devore helped Hawley get off to a 3-0 start on the season by rushing for 243 yards and scoring three times on just 10 carries in a 32-27 win over Hamlin. He also caught three passes for 89 yards and another touchdown and on defense he finished with six solo tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Garza hit on 21 of 41 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown and four extra points in La Villa’s 46-20 win over Brownsville St. Joseph Academy.

Boese passed for 400 yards and six touchdowns, completing 23 of 27 passes, and also threw a pair of two-point conversion passes in his team’s 63-28 win over The Woodlands Christian School.
