According to event organizers, more than 50 people faced off in hopes of reeling in the biggest bass.

However, the biggest catch may have been one off the water. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament benefited the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation.

The nonprofit aims to provide dental care to people in need all over Texas. Dr. Kent Macaulay with the organization says donations from events like the bass tournament bring in much needed funding.

On Sunday, that funding came from fishermen with their eyes on the water.

The competition was based on timed weigh-ins every two hours throughout the tournament. Whoever had the biggest bass after each weigh-in was declared a winner for each time slot.

"We've had quite a few anglers weigh-in fish at the first weigh-in," Big Sandy Creek Bass Club Member Michael Briseno said.

Tournament participant Dwayne Kinley checked into the weigh station at Emma Long Park with his catch.

"It's an overcast day and the wind is blowing so I'm targeting windblown flats," he said.

Even though Kinley has participated in the competition numerous times over the years, he said there is no home court advantage when it comes to fishing.

"The fish have to tell you what they want to do," he said.

Participant Daryl Price said he entered the tournament out of his love for the sport.

"It's addictive, it's fun, it's a hobby that has turned into a passion," he said.

It’s a passion that also helped the smiles of Texans.

Since 2001, the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation has treated 20,000 patients, adding up to $15 million in charitable care.

"Without these funds, we may not be able to provide the care that we need for these patients," Dr. Macaulay said.
