Rain, lower temperatures today

Central Texas could see rain and a slight dip in the excessive high temperatures the region has seen this month, with Tuesday marking the hottest day of year so far and the 12th straight triple-digit day, according to the National Weather Service.

Today, we’ll have a mostly cloudy day on tap with a high near 95, along with a 20 percent chance for showers, the service said. We’ll see winds of about 10 miles per hour, the service said.

Tonight, we’ll see partly cloudy skies with a low near 71 and winds between 5 and 10 miles per hour, the service said.

Yesterday marked the hottest day of the year so far at 107 degrees recorded at both Camp Mabry and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, according to the service. That beats out the previous hottest days of 2010 recorded Monday at 106 degrees and August 16 at 105.

It also marked the 12th straight triple digit day, and the 19th of the year. Last year, we saw 68 triple-digit days.

There’s likely more to come. We’re slated to see more triple-digit days by Friday, but lows will be dipping into the high 60s by then, signaling a decline in the high levels of humidity we’ve seen in recent days.
