Austin’s first-ever “Aquapalooza” kicks off Friday morning on the south side of Lake Travis.  The free, two-day battle of the bands event ends Saturday with an evening concert by country singer Brad Paisley.

“South by Southwest meets the water,” said organizer Hal Jones. “That is what it is.”

Because the stage itself sits in a private residential community called The Reserve, anyone in a vehicle who does not have a proper credential will be turned away. The only way to gain access to the venue is by water.

Boat builder Sea Ray is a sponsor, along with Austin’s Sail & Ski.  So far, nearly 4,000 boats have been registered.  More than 30,000 people are expected to attend.

Barbara Terrier plans to be one of them. “It’s just a fun thing to do to get out with your friends,” said Terrier. “Especially if you are going to hear good music.”

Sea Ray started the roving festival five years ago and Austin may be the best fit yet.

“Austin has the 'Live Music Capitol of the World' thing going on and boating is a big component of the Austin life,” said organizer Buzz Watkins.  “Now we have combined the two and that is what makes this event really special.”
