Calallen Head Baseball Coach Steve Chapman remembers well his last two meetings with the Cavaliers from Austin Lake Travis. Both of them came in the region semifinals.
"We were totally exhausted after both of them because of the effort that we put forth," he said.
"It was a big sigh of relief after beating them because they were very highly ranked and had tremendous talent."
Calallen will meet Lake Travis for the third straight season, this time with the regional championship on the line. The two will play game one of a best-of-three series Friday at San Antonio's Blossom Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with a third game to follow, if necessary.
Calallen has won all seven of its playoff games this season, winning by a combined score of 78-12. Lake Travis is coming off a hard-fought three-game series victory over third-ranked Moody.
"It's almost turning into Calallen and Moody the way we're playing them every single year," pitcher Wyatt Mathisen said. "We're going to hopefully knock them out for the third time in a row this year and it's going to be another tough series."
"The bats are going to have to come through. The defense is going to have to be good and everyone is going to have to be in shape and just keep battling," added outfielder Richard Montemayor.
The matchup is personal for Wildcats ace Rob Zastryzny. 14-0 this season, his last loss on the mound came at the hands of the Cavaliers in 2009, a game two defeat at Wildcat Stadium.
"They were my most embarrassing loss of the year," he said. "I had two home runs hit off me, one 400 feet over the fence, at least. I really want to get back at them because they beat me last year and I want to beat them this year."
